Notice that this sentence is different in structure from the one you started with ( Drive-ins represent Americans' creativity and business ingenuity ). The contestable part of your idea then appears in the independent clause ( they also have affected our personal standards ). In other words, you are no longer focusing on a claim that most people would agree with instead you are using the obvious as a point of departure for an idea you will need to prove.

6. Choosing a Subject
Suppose your instructor asks you to write an essay about a holiday experience. Within this general subject area, you choose a subject that holds your interest and about which you can readily get information: you were in downtown Chico on the morning of St. Patrick's Day and witnessed some unusual behavior–a melee broke out, resulting in injuries to bystanders and property damage to nearby cars. You wish to write about this.

This fragment not only announces your subject, but it focuses on one segment of the population: elementary school children. Furthermore, it raises a subject upon which reasonable people could disagree, because while most people might agree that children consume more sugar than they used to, not everyone would agree on what should be done or who should do it. You should note that this fragment is not a thesis statement because your reader doesn 8767 t know your conclusions on the topic.
