Notice that this sentence is different in structure from the one you started with ( Drive-ins represent Americans' creativity and business ingenuity ). The factual information in the earlier statement has been incorporated into a dependent clause ( While drive-ins... ingenuity ). The contestable part of your idea then appears in the independent clause ( they also have affected our personal standards ). In other words, you are no longer focusing on a claim that most people would agree with instead you are using the obvious as a point of departure for an idea you will need to prove.

The thesis statement usually appears near the beginning of a paper. It can be the first sentence of an essay, but that often feels like a simplistic, unexciting beginning. Notice how everything drives the reader toward the last sentence and how that last sentence clearly signals what the rest of this essay is going to do.

Suppose your instructor asks you to write an essay about a holiday experience. Within this general subject area, you choose a subject that holds your interest and about which you can readily get information: you were in downtown Chico on the morning of St. Patrick's Day and witnessed some unusual behavior–a melee broke out, resulting in injuries to bystanders and property damage to nearby cars. You wish to write about this.
This fragment not only announces your subject, but it focuses on one segment of the population: elementary school children. Furthermore, it raises a subject upon which reasonable people could disagree, because while most people might agree that children consume more sugar than they used to, not everyone would agree on what should be done or who should do it. You should note that this fragment is not a thesis statement because your reader doesn 8767 t know your conclusions on the topic.
